MSC Cruises has opened bookings for its third Alaska season, confirming that MSC Poesia will return to Seattle for another summer of seven-night voyages in 2028.

The newly announced season will run from April 24 through September 18, 2028, with weekly round-trip cruises visiting Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, Tracy Arm, Juneau and Victoria, British Columbia.

At the same time, MSC Cruises is adding a conservation and research component to its growing Alaska operation. Marine Mammal Observer Maria Snell has joined MSC Poesia during the 2026 season through the cruise line’s partnership with marine conservation organization ORCA.

Together, the two announcements show MSC doing more than simply adding another year of Alaska cruises. The cruise line is building a longer-term presence in the region while studying how passenger ships, guests and shore excursion operators interact with Alaska’s marine wildlife.

Round-trip departures from Seattle can also make the trip easier to plan for cruisers traveling from other parts of the United States, especially those who want to add a pre-cruise hotel stay before boarding MSC Poesia.

What guests will see during MSC Poesia’s 2028 Alaska cruises

MSC Poesia’s 2028 itinerary combines three popular Alaska cruise ports with scenic glacier viewing and a stop in Canada.

Ketchikan is known for its Native Alaskan culture, historic Creek Street and access to fishing and wilderness excursions.

Icy Strait Point is an Indigenous-owned cruise destination near the Tlingit community of Hoonah. Available experiences may include whale watching, wildlife tours, fishing, kayaking and cultural activities.

During the ship’s visit to Tracy Arm, guests will sail through a narrow fjord surrounded by steep cliffs, waterfalls and wildlife habitat. The scenic passage leads toward the North and South Sawyer Glaciers, although weather and ice conditions can affect how far ships are able to travel into the fjord.

Juneau offers another opportunity to experience Alaska’s scenery and wildlife before MSC Poesia visits Victoria, British Columbia, on its way back to Seattle.

MSC Poesia will return with an upgraded onboard experience

MSC Poesia received a major refurbishment ahead of its inaugural Alaska season in 2026.

One of the most significant additions was an MSC Yacht Club area featuring 69 suites, a private restaurant, the Top Sail Lounge and an exclusive sundeck with its own bar, grill and hot tubs.

The ship also received a Butcher’s Cut steakhouse, a reimagined Kaito Sushi Bar, an updated MSC Aurea Spa and an enhanced fitness center powered by Technogym.

These upgrades give Alaska travelers a wider selection of dining, wellness and accommodation options aboard the ship.

Guests can choose between MSC’s standard cruise experience and the more premium MSC Yacht Club without moving to one of the cruise line’s much larger ships.

While MSC Cruises is already selling its 2028 season, the cruise line is using its current Alaska operation to learn more about responsible cruising in whale-rich waters.

Maria Snell joined MSC Poesia as an ORCA-trained Marine Mammal Observer during the 2026 Alaska season.

Her work includes researching interactions between marine mammals and passenger vessels, reviewing shore excursions from a conservation perspective and educating guests about responsible wildlife tourism.

Snell is using a mobile observation rig that combines powerful binoculars with camera technology to collect information during the ship’s Alaska sailings.

The research may eventually help shape future crew training, onboard procedures and broader discussions about how passenger ships operate in areas with significant whale activity.

Snell also provides educational programming for passengers, helping guests understand more about the whales and other marine mammals they may encounter during their cruise.

Research could influence future MSC operations

MSC Cruises has worked with ORCA on marine wildlife training for shipboard officers since 2022.

However, the work aboard MSC Poesia marks the first time research conducted directly from an MSC Cruises ship will be used to help inform future crew training and operating protocols.

ORCA plans to publish a scientific report after the project concludes, making the findings available to the scientific and maritime communities.

The observer is also reviewing whale-watching and wildlife excursions through a conservation lens. That could make the project relevant beyond the ship itself, particularly if the research helps identify better practices for tour operators working near whales.

MSC Cruises has not announced that a Marine Mammal Observer will be aboard MSC Poesia during the 2028 season.

For now, the program applies to the ship’s 2026 Alaska operation, so travelers should not consider it a confirmed feature of future cruises.

MSC Cruises appears committed to Alaska for the long term

MSC Cruises entered the Alaska market for the first time in 2026.

The cruise line subsequently opened bookings for a second season in 2027, and the newly announced 2028 schedule extends that commitment into a third consecutive year.

That is a meaningful development for a cruise line that was entering an entirely new region only a few years earlier.

MSC Cruises is also maintaining the same basic approach, with one ship operating seven-night round-trip cruises from Seattle.

That consistency suggests MSC sees enough demand to continue building its presence in Alaska without making a dramatic change to the product.

The combination of an upgraded ship, MSC Yacht Club accommodations and ongoing conservation work also gives MSC Cruises a more developed Alaska story than it had when the program was first announced.

      The bottom line

MSC Poesia’s return in 2028 gives travelers another summer of MSC Cruises sailings from Seattle, with seven-night itineraries visiting Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, Tracy Arm, Juneau and Victoria.

The more interesting development may be what is happening alongside the new bookings.

Through its work with ORCA and Marine Mammal Observer Maria Snell, MSC Cruises is collecting research that could help improve how its ships, crews and guests operate in wildlife-rich destinations.

The observer program is not currently confirmed for 2028, but it adds another dimension to MSC’s growing Alaska presence.

What began as the cruise line’s first season in the region is quickly becoming an established part of its North American cruise schedule.
