MSC Fantasia is one of the most important ships in the history of MSC Cruises.
When she entered service in 2008, Fantasia introduced an entirely new generation of larger MSC cruise ships. She became the first member of the Fantasia Class and was later joined by MSC Splendida, MSC Divina and MSC Preziosa.
More importantly, MSC Fantasia was the first ship to introduce MSC Yacht Club.
The ship-within-a-ship concept debuted aboard Fantasia in 2008, giving passengers private suites, a dedicated lounge, exclusive restaurant, private pool deck, butler service and concierge assistance while still providing access to everything aboard a large mainstream cruise ship.
That idea has since become one of MSC Cruises’ signature products.
Fantasia remains an interesting ship today.
At nearly 138,000 gross tons and carrying up to 4,363 passengers, she is considerably larger than MSC’s Musica Class ships but still much smaller than MSC World America and the newest Meraviglia and Seaside vessels.
Passengers get multiple pools, specialty dining, a large theater, casino, Formula 1 simulator, 4D cinema, sports facilities, numerous lounges and a full Yacht Club.
The result is a ship that offers plenty to do without reaching modern mega-ship scale.

MSC currently lists Fantasia at 137,936 gross tons with 1,636 staterooms, capacity for 4,363 passengers and approximately 1,370 crew members.
MSC Fantasia is the original ship in the Fantasia Class. Splendida followed in 2009, Divina in 2012 and Preziosa in 2013.
What Makes MSC Fantasia Different?
Fantasia marked a major change in MSC ship design.
The Musica Class ships that came before her were around 92,000 to 95,000 gross tons.
Fantasia jumped to nearly 138,000 gross tons.
That additional size allowed MSC to offer more pools, more restaurants, larger entertainment spaces, expanded family facilities and significantly more premium accommodations.
Yet Fantasia still uses a traditional cruise-ship layout.
There is no enormous indoor promenade like you find aboard MSC Meraviglia or MSC Grandiosa.
There are no World Class-style districts.
Instead, most dining, entertainment, shopping and nightlife is concentrated on the lower public decks.
Cabins occupy much of the middle of the ship.
Pools, buffet restaurants, family spaces, spa facilities and outdoor recreation are located higher up.
That makes Fantasia considerably easier to understand than many of MSC’s newest ships.
And then there is Yacht Club.
Fantasia is where the entire concept started.
The Ship That Introduced MSC Yacht Club
Today, MSC Yacht Club is available across multiple MSC ship classes.
That was not the case when Fantasia entered service.
MSC first introduced Yacht Club aboard Fantasia in 2008 as a private area within a much larger cruise ship.
The original idea was relatively straightforward: give premium guests the privacy and personalized service of a smaller luxury vessel while allowing them to enjoy the entertainment and amenities of a large cruise ship.

MSC is continuing to modernize the Fantasia Class Yacht Club experience.
Fantasia’s dedicated Yacht Club restaurant, L’Etoile, is scheduled to receive a significant redesign in December 2026.
The new concept has already debuted aboard MSC Splendida.
The updated restaurant design includes:

- Softer materials and textures

Canary Islands and Madeira in Winter 2026-2027
Fantasia moves to the Canary Islands for winter 2026-2027.
MSC is scheduling seven-night cruises visiting destinations such as:
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife
- Puerto del Rosario
- Funchal
- Arrecife
- Las Palmas
MSC specifically highlights Fantasia as the ship bringing Yacht Club to these Canary Islands itineraries.
This could be one of Fantasia’s better itinerary matches.
Passengers get generally mild winter weather along with a ship that offers plenty of indoor and outdoor space.
The Yacht Club restaurant redesign is also scheduled to be completed in December 2026, putting the upgraded experience into service during this winter season.
Western Mediterranean in Summer 2027
Fantasia returns to the Western Mediterranean for summer 2027.
Seven-night itineraries include ports such as:
- Barcelona
- Ibiza
- Cagliari
- Civitavecchia for Rome
- Livorno for Florence
- Cannes
MSC’s current 2027 schedule shows the ship sailing this route repeatedly through the summer and fall.
As with many MSC Mediterranean cruises, passengers can embark at several different ports around the itinerary.
That makes it especially important to check the actual embarkation city when comparing fares.
Western Mediterranean in Winter 2027-2028
MSC has also announced that Fantasia will remain in the Western Mediterranean for winter 2027-2028.
The ship will sail seven-night cruises round-trip from Barcelona with calls including:
- Marseille
- Genoa
- Naples
- Palermo
- La Goulette, Tunisia
Embarkation will also be available from several ports along the route.
That continued Mediterranean deployment makes Fantasia one of MSC’s more consistently European ships.
Final Thoughts on MSC Fantasia
MSC Fantasia deserves more attention than simply being labeled an older MSC ship.
She represents one of the biggest turning points in the company’s fleet.
Fantasia introduced a larger style of MSC cruise ship.
She also introduced MSC Yacht Club, a concept that has since become one of the defining features of the cruise line.
And nearly two decades later, the basic formula still works.
Fantasia is large enough to provide multiple pools, specialty dining, numerous bars, a big theater, casino, family activities, sports facilities, spa, fitness center and extensive outdoor space.
But she remains considerably more manageable than MSC’s newest ships.
The current itinerary mix also suits the ship well.
Nine-night Mediterranean cruises allow passengers to focus on destinations such as Athens, Istanbul and the Greek islands.
Winter cruises around the Canary Islands make good use of the ship’s indoor and outdoor spaces.
And the redesigned Yacht Club restaurant arriving in December 2026 gives the premium experience another meaningful update.
There are newer ships with more attractions.
MSC World America has far more things to do.
MSC Seashore and Seascape offer more dramatic outdoor designs.
The Meraviglia Class has a much larger indoor promenade experience.
But those ships also come with more size and more passengers.
Fantasia occupies a useful middle ground.
For cruisers who want a substantial ship, an established Yacht Club, plenty of entertainment and a more traditional layout, MSC Fantasia still has a lot to offer.
And for anyone interested in the history of MSC Yacht Club, this is the ship where it all started.
