MSC’s next private island destination in The Bahamas is officially moving forward.
MSC Group’s Cruise Division has held the groundbreaking ceremony for Sandy Cay, the new luxury private island being developed next to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Even more importantly, MSC says construction and site work are already well underway ahead of the island’s planned opening in 2028.
Sandy Cay was first announced in April 2026 as a smaller, more intimate complement to Ocean Cay. The latest announcement gives us a clearer picture of what MSC has planned, including a focus on wellness, relaxation, dining and private retreats.
Construction Is Already Underway at Sandy Cay
The official groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 28, 2026, with representatives from MSC Group, the Bahamian government and other project stakeholders attending.

Although groundbreaking ceremonies often mark the beginning of a construction project, work at Sandy Cay is already further along. MSC says construction and site work are “well underway” as the company works toward the island’s scheduled 2028 opening.
That makes this more than a ceremonial announcement. Sandy Cay is actively moving toward becoming part of MSC’s growing Caribbean destination lineup.
What Will Sandy Cay Be Like?
Sandy Cay is being developed adjacent to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, but MSC isn’t trying to create a second version of Ocean Cay.
Instead, the company continues to position Sandy Cay as a smaller, more intimate and elevated private island experience.
The new island will focus heavily on wellness, relaxation and its natural surroundings. MSC says guests can expect pristine beaches and clear Bahamian water along with curated experiences built around the quieter island atmosphere.
MSC has also now confirmed several broader elements of the Sandy Cay experience, including:
- Dining experiences
- Private retreats
- Dedicated spaces for relaxation
- Wellness-focused experiences
- Attentive hospitality
- Beaches and natural areas
Exactly what those experiences will look like hasn’t been revealed yet, but the latest announcement provides a much clearer direction than we had when Sandy Cay was originally announced.
This does not sound like an island centered around water parks, slides or large attractions. Instead, MSC appears to be leaning further into one of Ocean Cay’s biggest strengths – creating a private island experience that still feels connected to the natural environment of The Bahamas.
Who Will Be Able to Visit Sandy Cay?
Sandy Cay is being developed exclusively for guests sailing with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.
That wording is important because it does not mean Sandy Cay will be exclusive to MSC Yacht Club guests.
MSC has still not announced exactly how access will work for MSC Cruises passengers, whether admission will be included or carry an additional charge, or whether Yacht Club guests will receive special access or benefits.
With Sandy Cay being positioned as a luxury destination, some type of premium experiences would not be surprising. For now, however, MSC has only confirmed that the island is intended for MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests.
Sandy Cay Will Complement Ocean Cay
Sandy Cay isn’t replacing Ocean Cay.
Instead, MSC plans for the neighboring islands to offer two distinctly different experiences.
Ocean Cay will continue to serve as MSC’s larger private island destination, with beaches, bars, dining, excursions, water activities and family experiences.
Sandy Cay will provide the more intimate side of the experience, with a stronger focus on relaxation, nature and elevated hospitality.
That combination could eventually give guests considerably more choice during an Ocean Cay visit. Families and guests looking for activities could spend more time around Ocean Cay, while those looking for a quieter or more premium experience could potentially head to Sandy Cay.
MSC has not yet explained exactly how guests will travel between the islands or how access will be managed.
Ocean Cay Is Getting Upgrades Too
Sandy Cay isn’t the only major project MSC has underway in The Bahamas.
MSC also used the announcement to confirm additional improvements coming to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.
Planned upgrades include additional dining venues, new beach concepts for both families and adults, expanded relaxation areas and new experiences that allow guests to engage more closely with marine conservation.
Those changes are significant because they show that MSC isn’t simply shifting its attention from Ocean Cay to Sandy Cay.
Instead, the company appears to be building a larger private destination experience around both islands.
Ocean Cay will offer the broader range of beaches, activities and family experiences, while Sandy Cay will provide a smaller luxury-focused escape nearby.
Sandy Cay Is Still Scheduled to Open in 2028
MSC continues to list 2028 as the planned opening year for Sandy Cay.
That timeline is consistent with the island’s original announcement in April 2026. MSC has also previously said that guests sailing during summer 2028 will be among the first to experience Sandy Cay.
The fact that construction and site work are already underway gives us a little more confidence that the project is progressing toward that target.
MSC has not yet announced an exact opening date.
There Are Still Some Big Sandy Cay Questions
Even with the groundbreaking announcement, several important details remain unknown.
MSC has not yet revealed the island’s specific restaurants and bars, pricing, cabana options, transportation arrangements, operating hours, MSC Yacht Club benefits or whether regular MSC Cruises guests will pay separately to visit.
We also don’t yet know whether MSC drink packages will work on Sandy Cay or how guests will move between Ocean Cay and the new island.
Those are the details that will ultimately determine how most MSC cruisers experience Sandy Cay.
For now, though, the biggest development is clear: Sandy Cay has moved beyond the announcement phase. Construction is underway, MSC is beginning to reveal what the experience will include, and the company’s next private island destination remains on track for a 2028 debut.
For MSC cruisers who already enjoy Ocean Cay, Sandy Cay could make a visit to this corner of The Bahamas an even bigger part of a Caribbean itinerary.
