MSC Cruises has canceled MSC Poesia’s November 1, 2026 sailing from PortMiami after the U.S. Coast Guard detained the ship for an inspection. The ship remained in Miami with guests onboard while the inspection was underway, and MSC said it could not resolve a regulatory matter in time for the voyage to proceed.
MSC and the Coast Guard have not publicly identified the specific issue behind the detention. A detention and a canceled sailing are confirmed. The underlying cause is not.
What happened to MSC Poesia in Miami
According to CBS News, Coast Guard Sector Miami detained MSC Poesia on Sunday, November 1. The Coast Guard said its teams were verifying the ship’s compliance with international standards and U.S. regulations, and described passenger, crew, vessel, and environmental safety as the Captain of the Port’s priority.
MSC Poesia had been scheduled to leave Miami on an 11-night Southern and Western Caribbean cruise. MSC Cruises later confirmed that it canceled the sailing because a regulatory matter arose before departure and could not be resolved in time.
CBS reported the cancellation on November 3. Cruise Radio and Cruise.Blog also reported that guests were told they could remain aboard through noon on Thursday, November 5 while arranging travel.
What MSC says guests will receive
MSC Cruises told CBS News that guests on the canceled sailing will receive a full refund of their cruise fare and support with their journey home. Cruise Radio reported the same refund commitment from an MSC spokesperson.
Reports about an additional future cruise credit or other compensation are based on guest-facing communications reported by Cruise.Blog. Those details have not appeared in MSC’s public statement to CBS News, so guests should rely on the instructions sent directly by MSC for their own booking.
What is still unknown
Neither the Coast Guard nor MSC Cruises has publicly said what specific condition or deficiency led to the detention. It is also not yet clear when the ship will be released or whether a later MSC Poesia sailing will be affected.
That means it would be premature to characterize the problem as mechanical, safety-related, environmental, staffing-related, or anything else. A Coast Guard inspection can address a range of compliance questions. Until authorities provide more detail, the confirmed facts are the detention, the canceled November 1 sailing, and MSC’s refund and travel-support commitment.
Why this matters for future MSC Poesia guests
MSC Poesia had just returned to Miami for a winter program of 10- and 11-night Caribbean, Central American, and Southern Caribbean sailings. MSC’s October 19 announcement described the ship as one of four MSC vessels homeporting in Miami for the season.
Guests due to sail soon should watch for direct communication from MSC Cruises and verify the status of their sailing in their booking before traveling to the terminal. Travelers who have already made independent flight or hotel arrangements should keep documentation and check their travel-insurance terms, since coverage and reimbursement rules depend on the policy and booking details.
