MSC Cruises is rolling out a new onboard water program called AQUA by MSC, and while it may sound like a small beverage update, this one could change a very familiar part of the cruise experience: grabbing bottled water around the ship.
The new program is designed to reduce single-use plastic water bottles by replacing much of the traditional bottled water setup with mineral-enriched water produced onboard. AQUA by MSC is available in both still and sparkling varieties and is created using onboard purification technology before being enhanced with minerals like magnesium and potassium.
In plain English, MSC is moving toward a refillable water model.
That means guests on ships with AQUA by MSC should expect fewer disposable plastic bottles and more water served by the glass, through refill stations, or in reusable bottles. For drink package guests, AQUA by MSC is included. For guests without a drink package, it may be available for purchase by the bottle, glass, or refill.
And yes, this is one of those changes where the details matter.
What’s Changing?
Once AQUA by MSC is introduced on a ship, the normal plastic bottled water experience is expected to be replaced by MSC’s new onboard water program.
Instead of picking up disposable bottles of still or sparkling water at bars, guests may receive AQUA by MSC in several ways:
- By the glass at bars and buffets
- From refill stations around the ship
- In larger glass bottles served in main dining rooms
- In reusable bottles, including MSC-branded bottles for eligible drink package guests
MSC says complimentary non-mineralized water will still be available at buffet dispensers for all guests. That is an important distinction. AQUA by MSC is the new mineral-enriched water program, while basic buffet water remains available separately.
For guests who always grab a few bottles of water to take back to the cabin, this may take a little adjustment. The new routine may involve filling a reusable bottle before heading to your room, the gym, the pool deck, or an excursion.
Why MSC Is Making the Change
The biggest reason for the change is sustainability.
MSC says the full rollout of AQUA by MSC across its fleet is expected to eliminate an average of more than 4 million plastic water bottles every month. Across the full year, that would represent more than 49 million single-use plastic water bottles removed from MSC ships.
That is a significant shift, especially considering how many bottled waters are consumed on a typical cruise. Guests grab them at bars, bring them to the cabin, take them ashore, carry them to the pool, and stash them in beach bags.
Replacing that with refillable bottles and onboard-produced water is a major operational change, even if it sounds simple on paper.
Which Ships Have AQUA by MSC?
MSC says AQUA by MSC is currently available on MSC World Europa and is being gradually introduced across the fleet, with the goal of rolling it out fleetwide by the end of 2026.
For U.S. cruisers, MSC Poesia is also worth watching closely as she enters the U.S. market. Early onboard reports indicate that AQUA by MSC is already appearing there, which means American guests may start encountering the program sooner than they expect.
As with many cruise line rollouts, the experience may vary by ship and sailing while the program is being introduced. Some ships may still operate under the familiar bottled water system, while others may already be shifting to the new AQUA by MSC setup.
What This Means for Drink Packages
This is where the change gets especially important.
MSC says guests with drink packages receive unlimited AQUA by MSC. That should include both still and sparkling options, depending on where you are onboard and how the ship has the program set up.
But guests should understand that this may not feel exactly like the old bottled water perk.
Previously, many MSC cruisers used their drink package to pick up sealed bottles of water throughout the day. With AQUA by MSC, the water is still included for drink package guests, but it may be served by the glass or through refill stations instead of handed out as individual plastic bottles.
That is not necessarily a bad thing. It is just different.
Guests without a drink package should not assume AQUA by MSC refill stations are automatically free. MSC says AQUA can be purchased by guests without a drink package, while complimentary non-mineralized buffet water remains available to all guests.
So the basic rule is this:
If you have a drink package, AQUA by MSC should be included. If you do not have a drink package, free water is still available at the buffet, but AQUA by MSC may cost extra.
Will Bottled Water Still Be Available?
For most day-to-day situations, guests should expect AQUA by MSC to replace the regular plastic bottled water setup once it is rolled out on a ship.
That said, MSC’s own information leaves room for traditional mineral water in glass bottles in select premium areas. Yacht Club guests may still receive traditional mineral water in glass bottles, and specialty restaurants may also continue to offer glass-bottled mineral water.
So it is probably not accurate to say bottled water disappears entirely from every part of the ship. A better way to think of it is this: AQUA by MSC becomes the standard onboard water program, while some premium or specialty settings may still handle water differently.
Because apparently even water can have cabin categories now.
What Guests Should Do Before Sailing
If you are sailing on a ship with AQUA by MSC, the best thing you can do is pack an empty reusable water bottle.
Even if you have a drink package, having your own bottle will make life easier. You can fill it before going to the cabin, heading to the gym, walking around the ship, or going ashore.
It is also worth asking once onboard how the program works on your specific ship. During a rollout, crew instructions, refill station locations, and guest habits may still be settling in.
This is especially true for guests sailing without a drink package. You will want to know which water options are complimentary and which are part of the paid AQUA by MSC program.
Looking Ahead
AQUA by MSC is a good example of a cruise line change that is both simple and not simple at all.
The concept is easy to understand: fewer plastic bottles, more refillable water options. But the onboard reality affects drink packages, bar service, buffet routines, cabin habits, and what guests expect when they order water.
For many cruisers, the change will be perfectly manageable. Bring a reusable bottle, know what your drink package includes, and adjust your routine a bit.
For others, especially those who liked grabbing sealed bottles throughout the day, it may feel like a noticeable change.

Bottom Line
MSC Cruises is rolling out AQUA by MSC as part of a broader effort to reduce single-use plastic water bottles across its fleet. The new program provides mineral-enriched still and sparkling water produced onboard and served through dining venues, bars, buffets, and refill stations.
For drink package guests, AQUA by MSC should be included. For guests without a drink package, free buffet water should still be available, but AQUA by MSC may be a paid option.
This is a positive sustainability move, but it is also a practical change guests should understand before boarding. If your ship has AQUA by MSC, pack a reusable bottle and be ready for a slightly different water routine onboard.
