AQUA By MSC Rollout
This page describes the AQUA by MSC program by MSC. It is currently being rolled out to the entire fleet. We’ll keep a list updated of what ships have this program vs. the traditional water options. Check on your sailing to see if AQUA will be included.
MSC Cruises is rolling out a new onboard water program called AQUA by MSC, and while it sounds like a small change, it could affect one of the most common little habits on a cruise: grabbing bottled water from a bar, taking it back to your cabin, and pretending you are definitely going to drink enough water tomorrow.
AQUA by MSC is MSC’s new mineral-enriched water program. Instead of relying on single-use plastic bottles, MSC is producing purified water onboard and enhancing it with minerals like magnesium and potassium. It is available as both still and sparkling water, depending on the location and setup onboard.
This is part sustainability effort, part operational change, and part drink package update. For cruisers, the big question is pretty simple: what happens to bottled water once AQUA by MSC arrives on your ship?
The short answer: once AQUA by MSC is introduced on a ship, guests should expect the regular plastic bottled water setup to be replaced by MSC’s new onboard water system. Instead of grabbing disposable bottles of still or sparkling water at bars, AQUA by MSC is served by the glass, through refill stations, or with reusable bottles.
There are a few exceptions and details, because of course there are. It’s cruising. There are always details.
What Is AQUA by MSC?
AQUA by MSC is MSC Cruises’ new onboard water program designed to reduce single-use plastic bottles across the fleet.
MSC describes AQUA as purified drinking water produced onboard using advanced purification technology. The water is then mineral-enriched with magnesium and potassium, giving it a cleaner, crisper taste than basic tap or dispenser water.
AQUA by MSC is available in both:
- Still water
- Sparkling water
Depending on where you are on the ship, it may be served by the glass, from refill stations, or in larger reusable glass bottles in dining venues.
The idea is that MSC can provide drinking water onboard without relying on millions of single-use plastic bottles every year. According to MSC, the full rollout is expected to eliminate more than 49 million single-use plastic water bottles annually across the fleet.
That is a pretty massive number. It also means guests may need to adjust expectations, especially if they are used to stocking up on bottled water during the cruise.
Which MSC Ships Have AQUA by MSC?
MSC says AQUA by MSC is currently available on MSC World Europa and MSC Poesia and is being rolled out gradually across the fleet, with the goal of expanding throughout 2026.
Because this program is still being introduced, the experience may vary by ship and sailing. Some ships may still feel like the “old” MSC bottled water setup, while others may already be shifting toward refill stations, reusable bottles, and AQUA by MSC as the standard water option.
Does AQUA by MSC Replace Bottled Water?
For most guests, yes – that appears to be the point.
Once AQUA by MSC is rolled out on a ship, guests should expect the normal plastic bottled water experience to be phased out. Instead of receiving or picking up disposable plastic bottles of still or sparkling water around the ship, the default water option becomes AQUA by MSC.
That means water may be offered in several ways:
- By the glass at bars and buffets
- In larger reusable glass bottles in main dining rooms
- Through refill stations around the ship
- In MSC-branded reusable bottles for drink package guests
- In your own refillable bottle, if you bring one onboard empty
MSC’s own drink package language says refill stations may be used with MSC-branded reusable bottles, which are complimentary for drink package holders, or with a guest’s own water bottle.
There is one important caveat: traditional mineral water in glass bottles may still be available in some premium settings, including Yacht Club and specialty restaurants. So I would not describe this as “no bottled water anywhere on the ship.” A better way to think of it is this:
AQUA by MSC replaces the normal everyday plastic bottled water setup, but select glass-bottled mineral water may still appear in premium dining or Yacht Club settings.
That distinction matters, especially for guests comparing drink packages or wondering whether they will still be able to take water back to the cabin.
Is AQUA by MSC Included With Drink Packages?
Yes. MSC says guests with a drink package receive unlimited AQUA by MSC.
This is probably the most important point for anyone trying to decide whether an MSC drink package is worth it. Historically, one of the underrated perks of MSC drink packages was the ability to grab bottled water throughout the ship. Even if you were not drinking many cocktails, bottled water, specialty coffee, soda, and bottled drinks added real value.
With AQUA by MSC, that value changes slightly. You are still getting water included, but it may not look the same as before. Instead of walking away from a bar with several sealed plastic bottles, you may be getting water by the glass, filling a reusable bottle, or using refill stations.
That is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is different.
For drink package guests, the practical takeaway is:
You still get unlimited water, but it may be AQUA by MSC rather than individual disposable bottles.
Is AQUA by MSC Free for Everyone?
Not exactly.
This is where some confusion can come in. AQUA by MSC is included for guests with drink packages, but MSC says guests without a drink package can purchase AQUA by MSC by the bottle, glass, or refill.
That means the refill stations should not be assumed to be “free for everyone” just because they look like water stations. If you do not have a drink package, there may be a charge to use AQUA refill options. MSC also says all guests continue to have access to complimentary non-mineralized water at the buffet.
So there are really two different categories of water onboard:
Complimentary buffet water: available to all guests, similar to what MSC has traditionally offered at buffet drink stations.
AQUA by MSC: mineral-enriched still or sparkling water, included with drink packages or available for purchase.
That difference is important. If you are sailing without a drink package, you should still be able to get free water at the buffet, but AQUA by MSC may cost extra.
How Much Does AQUA by MSC Cost Without a Drink Package?
MSC’s published examples list AQUA by MSC pricing in euros, including:
- €2 for a 1L bottle to consume in the main restaurants
- €1 to refill a Half 50 bottle at self-serve refill stations
- €0.50 for a 20cl glass (7oz) in bars and buffets
Prices may vary by ship, region, currency, and sailing, so I would treat any published pricing as a guide rather than a guaranteed amount for every U.S. cruise.
The bigger point is this: AQUA by MSC is not automatically free for guests without a drink package.
If you do not buy a drink package, you can still use the complimentary buffet water, but the mineral-enriched AQUA program may be charged separately.
Can You Bring Your Own Water Bottle?
Yes, and this may become a much better habit on MSC ships as AQUA rolls out. MSC says guests can use their own water bottle at refill stations. Drink package holders may also receive an MSC-branded reusable bottle. However, guests should not plan to bring cases of bottled water onboard. MSC’s FAQ says local authorities restrict guests from bringing bottled water aboard.
So the best move is to bring an empty reusable bottle. It gives you more flexibility, especially if you like having water in the cabin overnight, taking water to the gym, or carrying water with you around the ship.
My advice: pack a reusable bottle that is easy to clean, not too bulky, and fits in a backpack or beach bag. This is one of those small packing choices that may save you some irritation onboard.
What About Sparkling Water?
Sparkling water is part of AQUA by MSC.
MSC says sparkling AQUA is available at refill stations, by the glass in bars and buffets, and in reusable glass bottles by the glass in main restaurants.
That should be good news for sparkling water drinkers, especially those who previously relied on bottled sparkling water as part of their drink package. The main difference is that you may be getting it through the AQUA system rather than in individual plastic bottles.
What About Yacht Club?
Yacht Club guests should have the smoothest version of this change.
MSC says Yacht Club guests have unlimited access to AQUA by MSC, but traditional mineral water in glass bottles may still be served in Yacht Club areas such as the Top Sail Lounge and Yacht Club Restaurant. Yacht Club suites may also continue to receive traditional mineral water in glass bottles.
That means Yacht Club guests may see AQUA by MSC around the ship, but the more premium bottled-water experience may still exist inside Yacht Club spaces.
In other words, Yacht Club continues to Yacht Club.
What About Specialty Restaurants?
Specialty restaurants may also continue to offer traditional mineral water in glass bottles. We expect AQUA to be used in specialty restaurants for cruisers who have the drink package and to be an upgrade for cruisers without the drink package. This is how MSC operates in the “old” method with plastic and glass bottles.
What About Ocean Cay?
For now, MSC says AQUA by MSC is not yet available on Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.
That matters for U.S. cruisers because Ocean Cay is included on many MSC sailings from Florida and other U.S. ports. If your ship has AQUA by MSC onboard, the setup on Ocean Cay may still be different.
This is also a good reason to pay attention to onboard announcements, bar menus, and package details once you board. MSC’s private island drink setup already has its own quirks, and AQUA by MSC adds one more thing to keep an eye on.
Is This a Good Change?
Overall, I think the idea makes sense.
Reducing single-use plastic bottles on cruise ships is a good thing. Cruise ships go through a huge amount of bottled water, and MSC’s estimate of eliminating tens of millions of plastic bottles annually shows how big the impact could be.
But from the cruiser side, convenience matters too.
A sealed bottle of water is easy. You can take it to your cabin, bring it on an excursion, toss it in a beach bag, or keep it by the bed. A refillable bottle can do most of those things, but it requires a little more planning.
The success of AQUA by MSC will probably depend on a few practical details:
- Are refill stations easy to find?
- Are lines reasonable?
- Do guests understand what is free and what costs extra?
- Are crew members giving consistent answers?
- Is sparkling water widely available?
- Can guests conveniently fill bottles before leaving for port?
If MSC gets those details right, this could be a solid improvement. If not, guests may feel like they lost a convenient perk, especially those who bought drink packages expecting bottled water.
Tips for Sailing on a Ship With AQUA by MSC
If your ship has AQUA by MSC, here are a few practical tips:
- Bring an empty reusable water bottle. Even if you have a drink package, having your own bottle gives you more flexibility.
- Ask how AQUA works on your specific ship. Rollouts can vary, and crew members onboard will know the current setup better than any pre-cruise FAQ.
- Do not assume refill stations are free without a package. Complimentary buffet water should still be available, but AQUA by MSC may be treated differently.
- Fill up before heading to your cabin for the night. This is especially helpful if you are used to keeping bottled water by the bed.
- Check the Ocean Cay setup separately. AQUA by MSC may not be available there yet, so island drink service may work differently than onboard service.
- If you are in Yacht Club or eating in specialty restaurants, ask what bottled or glass water options are available. Those venues may still handle water differently than regular bars and buffets.
Bottom Line
AQUA by MSC is MSC Cruises’ new onboard water program, designed to replace single-use plastic bottled water with mineral-enriched still and sparkling water produced onboard.
For guests with drink packages, AQUA by MSC should be included and unlimited. For guests without a package, AQUA may be available for purchase by the bottle, glass, or refill, while complimentary non-mineralized water should still be available at the buffet.
The biggest change is convenience. If you are used to grabbing plastic bottles of water throughout the ship, AQUA by MSC will feel different. You may be filling a reusable bottle, getting water by the glass, or using refill stations instead.
It is a smart sustainability move, but cruisers should understand the rules before boarding. Pack an empty reusable bottle, know what your drink package includes, and do not assume every water option onboard works the same way.
For most guests, AQUA by MSC should be manageable once you know what to expect. But like many things with MSC, a little preparation can save you some confusion once you are actually onboard.
