MSC Cruises has two ship families that deliver noticeably different versions of a big-ship vacation: Meraviglia Class and Seaside Class. Both offer pools, restaurants, entertainment, and plenty for families, but the way you spend your time onboard feels different.
Our recommendation is straightforward. Choose a Meraviglia-family ship if you like a lively indoor promenade, a large covered activity hub, or a cruise where the weather may be unpredictable. Choose a Seaside-family ship if you want outdoor decks, ocean views, waterfront walks, and more opportunities to eat or relax outside. Neither family is automatically less crowded or better for every traveler.

Which MSC Ships Are in Each Family?
The Meraviglia family has five ships. MSC Meraviglia and MSC Bellissima are the original Meraviglia ships. MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa, and MSC Euribia are the larger Meraviglia Plus evolution. They share the indoor Galleria idea, but their size, activities, and onboard venues are not identical.
The Seaside family has four ships. MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview are the original Seaside design. MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape are Seaside EVO, a larger evolution with reworked public areas and more outdoor space. Think of EVO and Plus as important variations within each family, not separate cruise styles.
For North American travelers, examples worth comparing include Meraviglia and Grandiosa on the indoor-focused side, and Seaside, Seashore, and Seascape on the outdoor-focused side. Itineraries and departure ports change, so compare the actual sailing dates instead of assuming a ship always leaves from one port.
The Main Difference: Indoor Galleria or Outdoor Waterfront?
Meraviglia ships center much of their public life on the Galleria, a two-deck indoor promenade lined with places to shop, grab a drink, and spend time together. Its large LED ceiling can change the atmosphere throughout the day and evening. It creates a natural meeting point that works even when the sun disappears or the weather turns.
Seaside ships take a less conventional approach. Their design gives the outdoors a much bigger role, including a low waterfront boardwalk, glass walkways, open-air seating, and wide sea views. Some of the best wandering and relaxing on a Seaside-family ship happens outside rather than in a central indoor shopping street.
That difference also makes Seaside unusual compared with the familiar layout of many large cruise ships. The Meraviglia arrangement feels more like a conventional modern resort ship with a central indoor hub, while Seaside makes the ocean a more visible part of ordinary onboard life.
Pools and Outdoor Spaces
If spending time outside is your favorite part of cruising, Seaside Class has the edge. Its aft-facing pool areas, outdoor promenades, and sea-view lounging spots make you feel connected to the water. The original Seaside design puts a prominent pool experience toward the back of the ship, while Seaside EVO ships such as Seashore and Seascape add or reshape outdoor pool and lounging options, including areas along the sides.
The Seaside family is not strictly an outdoor-only design. The Jungle Pool area provides a covered or retractable-roof alternative, and its surrounding family features and waterslides give children more than one place to spend time. Exact layouts and slide arrangements vary by ship.
Meraviglia ships still have outdoor pools and water attractions. The distinction is that the indoor Galleria and big interior public spaces remain a major part of the experience. Compare the actual ship’s pool deck rather than choosing solely by a class-wide count of pools or hot tubs.

Family Activities and Entertainment
Both families offer plenty for families, so this is not a simple winner-takes-all category. Meraviglia stands out for its substantial indoor sports and recreation space. On MSC Meraviglia, for example, the Sportplex gives kids and teens a large multi-purpose area that is especially useful when spending the whole day outside is less appealing.
On Seaside-family ships, the pool decks, covered Jungle Pool area, and waterslides tend to be a more visible part of the family experience. If your children want outdoor water activities and easy transitions between pools, loungers, and snacks, that layout may feel like a better fit.
Evening entertainment, arcades, simulators, shows, and individual attractions vary by ship. Do not book on the assumption that every Meraviglia or Seaside ship has the exact same signature experience. Check the ship you are actually considering.
Weather and Itinerary: Where Meraviglia Has the Advantage
Meraviglia’s indoor Galleria is a real advantage on cruises with cool, rainy, windy, or unpredictable conditions. It gives you a large, active place to spend time without relying on a sunny pool deck. That can matter on shoulder-season cruises and itineraries with mixed weather.
For a warm Caribbean or Bahamas sailing with plenty of sea days, Seaside’s outdoor-focused design becomes particularly appealing. You can enjoy more of the ocean air and water views while simply moving around the ship, stopping for a drink, or finding somewhere to sit.
This is a preference, not a hard rule. Seaside-family ships have covered indoor spaces, and Meraviglia-family ships are perfectly capable warm-weather choices. Weather should tip your decision when the outdoor spaces are a major reason you are booking.
Dining, Bars, Cabins, and MSC Yacht Club
The broad MSC dining experience overlaps across both families. You will find main dining options, buffet dining, bars, and specialty restaurants, but the precise venues and packages differ from ship to ship. One reason to favor Seaside is the ability to enjoy outdoor dining and drinks with a view. If eating al fresco is a highlight of your vacation, that is a meaningful part of its appeal.
Cabin options also overlap broadly, including interior, ocean-view, balcony, and suite categories. Both families offer MSC Yacht Club, the line’s suite-focused, access-restricted experience on the ships in these groups. Yacht Club layouts, cabins, and private areas differ by ship, so compare the exact vessel and cabin location before booking. Our Meraviglia Class cabin guide provides more detail on that family.
Some attractions, specialty dining, spa services, and exclusive areas cost extra or require the appropriate experience level. Do not assume that a venue you see in a ship photo is included in every fare.
Which Class Would We Choose?
For a cooler-weather itinerary or a trip with uncertain conditions, we lean Meraviglia. The indoor Galleria and recreation areas give you more to do without needing great weather.
For a warm-weather cruise where the ship itself is part of the vacation, we lean Seaside. Walking near the water, sitting outside with a drink, and choosing outdoor dining spaces feel central to the design.
For families, start with your children’s interests. Sportplex-style indoor recreation may point you toward Meraviglia, while a family that wants pools, slides, and outdoor deck time may prefer Seaside. Both have family options, and neither deserves a blanket “less crowded” label.
For guests booking MSC Yacht Club, specialty dining, or a particular cabin, compare individual ships and prices before deciding on the class. Those details can matter more than the overall ship concept.
A Few Important Checks Before You Book
- Confirm whether the sailing is on an original ship or its larger Plus/EVO evolution. Public spaces and venues can change considerably within the family.
- Check the exact itinerary and season, especially if your preferred experience depends on warm weather or outdoor areas.
- Compare the ship-specific pool layout, activity lineup, dining venues, and any extra charges. The class gives you the overall personality; the ship determines the details.
