Freeport is Back! MSC Cruises to Build Massive New Beach Club at Grand Lucayan

For years, Freeport has been the “quiet neighbor” of the Bahamas—a port that many cruisers often skipped or stayed on the ship for. But that is about to change in a massive way.

MSC Group has officially confirmed a deal to transform a 20-acre slice of the iconic Grand Lucayan Resort into a dedicated MSC Beach Club. This isn’t just a small renovation; it’s part of a broader $450 million investment in Grand Bahama that aims to put Freeport back on the map as a premier cruise destination.

    The Revitalization of Freeport

It’s no secret that Freeport’s popularity as a cruise port had been dwindling. While Nassau and private islands saw billion-dollar upgrades, Freeport often felt left behind. MSC’s investment changes the narrative. By building the new Billy Cay Terminal (a $400 million project) and now the MSC Beach Club at the Grand Lucayan, MSC is effectively “saving” Freeport. This dual investment ensures that when your ship docks, you aren’t just arriving at an industrial port; you’re arriving at a world-class gateway to the island.

MSC Goes Toe-to-Toe with Royal Caribbean

Perhaps the most exciting insight is what this says about MSC’s ambition. This is MSC’s first-ever “Beach Club” concept. While Ocean Cay is a pristine marine reserve focused on nature and tranquility, the Beach Club at the Grand Lucayan will likely offer a more high-energy, resort-style experience.

This move signals that MSC is ready to go toe-to-toe with Royal Caribbean and their “Royal Beach Club” portfolio. By securing a footprint at the Grand Lucayan, MSC is claiming its own exclusive territory. It’s a bold statement: MSC is no longer just a European alternative—they are building the same level of exclusive, land-based luxury as the biggest names in the industry.

A New Chapter for Caribbean Itineraries

One of the challenges for frequent Bahamas cruisers is “port fatigue.” If you sail the Bahamas often, you’ve likely seen Nassau and Ocean Cay a dozen times. The addition of the Freeport Beach Club gives MSC a powerful variety of Bahamian stops:

      • Ocean Cay: The eco-friendly, relaxing private island experience.
      • Nassau: The classic, bustling city and shopping hub.
      • Freeport (Beach Club): The upscale, resort-style beach day.

This variety is huge for itinerary planning. It allows MSC to offer “All-Bahamas” sailings that actually feel diverse, or mix-and-match ports to keep their Caribbean runs fresh for returning guests.

What We Know About the Site

The club will take over The Reef Village portion of the Grand Lucayan. While specific amenities haven’t been fully detailed in a glossy brochure yet, we know it will be exclusive to MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests. Given MSC’s track record with the Yacht Club, we expect a premium “ship-to-shore” experience. Imagine the service levels of the ship’s private lounges transported onto 20 acres of white Bahamian sand.

      The Bottom Line

Construction was slated to begin immediately after the announcment in April, 2026. This project, combined with the new pier at Billy Cay, represents a $1.5 billion total commitment by MSC to the Bahamas. For the fans at MSCCruiseFan, this is the news we’ve been waiting for. It means more variety, better facilities, and a clear sign that MSC is doubling down on the North American market. Freeport isn’t just a stop on the map anymore—it’s becoming a destination.
