MSC Theme Parties Guide: White Party, Glow Night, 70s/80s, and Silent Disco

One of the things MSC does really well is create those big, shared moments onboard where the whole ship seems to lean into the fun at the same time. Theme parties are a perfect example.

If you are sailing MSC for the first time, you may be wondering whether these parties are a huge deal, whether you need to pack special outfits, and whether you will feel out of place if you do not go all in.

The good news? You do not need to turn your suitcase into a floating costume shop to have fun.

On most MSC cruises, you can expect a few recurring party favorites like the White Party, Glow Night, a retro-style 70s/80s Sunshine Party, and the always-fun Silent Disco. Some guests pack specifically for them. Others just show up in something close enough and have a great time anyway. Both approaches work.

Here is what these parties are really like, what to wear, and what is actually worth packing.

Do You Need to Dress Up for MSC Theme Parties?

Not really. But it helps to have a few simple items ready.

That is the sweet spot on MSC. These parties are popular, and a lot of guests do make some effort, especially for White Party. At the same time, there is usually plenty of room for people who just show up with what they have.

    Think of it this way:

    • Some cruisers plan outfits ahead of time and love every second of it
    • Some bring one or two flexible items and make them work across multiple nights
    • Some walk in wearing regular cruise clothes and still have a blast

If you pack smart, you can absolutely be ready without overpacking.

    White Party

If there is one MSC theme party to plan for, this is it.

White Party is usually the biggest recurring party on the ship and the one most guests seem to know about before they even board. It has that classic cruise-night energy – lively, social, a little glamorous, and very easy to join in on.

    The vibe

Think breezy, upbeat, and festive. It feels elevated, but not stuffy. This is not a formal night in disguise. It is more like a big all-ages cruise celebration where white clothing helps create the mood.

    What to wear

Head-to-toe white is the ideal, but it does not need to be complicated.

    Good options include:

    • White sundress
    • White polo with shorts
    • White tee and jeans
    • White linen shirt and pants
    • White blouse with a skirt or casual slacks

If all you have is mostly white, that is usually close enough.

    Pro tip

Pack nude undergarments if you are bringing white clothes. Cruise lighting has a way of exposing your planning mistakes in high definition.

    Worth packing for?

Yes. If you only build one outfit around an MSC party theme, make it White Party.

    Sunshine Party – MSC’s 70s/80s Retro Night

This is MSC’s retro catch-all party, and it is usually less about historical accuracy and more about colorful, loud, dance-floor fun.

Depending on the sailing, you may see it framed as a Sunshine Party or with a Flower Glory or Peace & Love type of sub-theme. Either way, this is the cruise version of a retro party, not a museum exhibit. Nobody is checking whether your look is more 1977 or 1984.

    The vibe

Groovy, nostalgic, playful, and a little gloriously over-the-top.

    What to wear

You can lean 70s, 80s, or just general retro chaos.

    For a 70s-inspired look:

    • Tie-dye
    • Bell bottoms
    • Fringe
    • Headbands
    • Aviator sunglasses

    For a more 80s-inspired look:

    • Neon windbreaker
    • Oversized graphic tee
    • Bright leggings
    • Leg warmers
    • Big accessories

    Pro tip

This is one of the easiest nights to fake with one or two accessories. A tie-dye shirt or retro sunglasses can do a lot of the work without eating up half your suitcase.

    Worth packing for?

Yes, but lightly. This is a great night to suggest the theme instead of fully committing to a costume.

    Glow Night / Neon Party

Glow Night is where MSC leans into late-night party energy. This is the bright, blacklight, high-energy event where neon colors suddenly become a great decision.

    The vibe

Futuristic, loud, clubby, and very much designed for adults, though kids may still be around depending on the sailing and timing.

    What to wear

This is the time for anything bright, UV-reactive, or just loud enough to glow under blacklights.

    Good choices:

    • Neon green
    • Hot pink
    • Bright orange
    • Electric yellow
    • White tops that pop under UV light

You do not need a full rave outfit. One bright shirt and a couple fun accessories will usually get the job done.

    Pro tip

Do not rely only on clothing. Glow glasses, LED accessories, foam sticks, or glow paint can make a bigger impact than the outfit itself. And yes, MSC may sell these onboard, but it is usually smarter to buy them before the cruise and avoid the “cruise convenience pricing.”

    Worth packing for?

Yes, but this is another one where accessories can carry the whole look.

    Silent Disco

Silent Disco is one of those events that sounds odd until you try it, and then suddenly you understand why people love it.

Everyone gets wireless headphones and can switch between different music channels. From the outside, it looks ridiculous. From inside the headphones, it is a full-on dance party.

    The vibe

Funny, energetic, and way more entertaining than it has any right to be.

The best part is taking one headphone ear off and realizing half the room is singing completely different songs with enormous confidence.

    What to wear

Usually whatever you already had on that evening works fine. Silent Disco often feels more about the experience than the outfit.

    Headset colors and music channels

The headset colors may vary a bit by ship, but the concept is usually the same. Different colors signal different music channels, and that is how you find your people on the dance floor.

A common setup looks something like this:

    • Blue – EDM or dance music
    • Red – throwbacks and sing-alongs
    • Green – Latin or pop

Even if the exact genres shift, the color-coded channel system is part of the fun.

    Pro tip

If you are traveling with family or friends, glance around and see which color dominates in different corners of the room. That is often the easiest way to spot where your favorite music is winning.

    Worth packing for?

No, because there is nothing to pack! Silent Disco is the easiest party on the ship to enjoy without packing anything special.

How Much Effort Do People Actually Make?

This is the question almost everybody wants answered before their first MSC cruise.

The honest answer is: it varies.

Some guests absolutely pack for these parties on purpose. They have the white outfit ready, the neon accessories packed, and the retro shirt folded like it is game day.

Others just show up with whatever fits the vibe best from the clothes they already brought.

    That is normal too.

In other words, you are not going to feel wildly underdressed if you are not in full costume. You may notice that some people went all in, especially at White Party or Glow Night, but there is usually a wide range onboard. That is part of what makes MSC theme parties approachable.

    What’s Actually Worth Packing

If you want to be prepared without wasting suitcase space, here is the smart packing list.

    MSC theme party packing list

    • One white outfit or mostly white outfit
    • One neon or bright-color top
    • One retro-friendly shirt or accessory
    • Comfortable shoes for dancing
    • Glow accessories
    • Retro sunglasses or a fun headband
    • Lightweight white layer for breezy evenings
    • Nude undergarments for white clothing

That is enough to cover the major party nights on most MSC cruises without turning packing into a special project.

    What You Can Skip Packing

This is where a lot of cruisers can save luggage space.

    You probably do not need:

    • Bulky costumes
    • Separate shoes for every party
    • Multiple glow outfits
    • Full 70s and full 80s looks
    • Expensive accessories you will wear once

A few flexible pieces will go further than a suitcase full of one-night-only clothing.

    The Best Packing Strategy

If you want the easiest possible plan, do this:

    • Prioritize White Party first
    • Bring one bright item for Glow Night
    • Add one fun retro accessory for Sunshine Party
    • Do not stress about Silent Disco

That gets you most of the way there.

A white shirt can work for White Party and other casual evenings. A neon top can work for Glow Night and daytime wear. A pair of retro sunglasses or a tie-dye shirt can handle the Sunshine Party. Silent Disco takes care of itself.

    Final Thoughts

MSC theme parties are supposed to be fun, not stressful.

Yes, some people pack specifically for them. Yes, you will definitely see guests who understood the assignment. But you do not need to overthink it to have a great time.

If you pack one white outfit, one bright or neon item, and one retro-ish accessory, you will be in very good shape for the most common party nights on most MSC cruises.

And if all else fails, show up, grab a drink, and let somebody else in glowing leg warmers do the heavy lifting.
