MSC Fantasia Class: Complete Ship Class Overview

The MSC Fantasia Class represents one of the most important generations of ships in MSC Cruises history.

These were the ships that moved MSC beyond the mid-sized design of the Musica Class and into the large resort-ship category.

More importantly, this is where MSC Yacht Club began.

When MSC Fantasia entered service in 2008, she introduced MSC’s ship-within-a-ship concept with private suites, a dedicated lounge, exclusive restaurant, private pool deck, butler service and concierge.

MSC Yacht Club has since become one of the defining features of the cruise line.

The Fantasia Class eventually grew to four ships:

      MSC Divina2012139,072 GT4,3451,751
      MSC Preziosa2013139,072 GT4,3451,751

Fantasia and Splendida are the original versions of the design.

Divina and Preziosa are slightly larger evolutions with additional cabins and some changes to their outdoor spaces, restaurants and onboard attractions.

All four ships have MSC Yacht Club.

For cruisers who want a substantial resort-style ship without moving all the way up to MSC’s newest mega ships, the Fantasia Class remains an interesting middle ground.

Quick Answer: What Is the MSC Fantasia Class Known For?

The Fantasia Class is best known for introducing MSC Yacht Club and bringing a much larger resort-style cruise experience to the MSC fleet.

Compared with the smaller Musica Class, Fantasia Class ships offer:

      • More restaurants
      • More bars and lounges
      • More pools
      • Larger theaters
      • More balcony cabins
      • Larger family areas
      • Specialty dining
      • Casinos
      • Sports facilities
      • 4D cinemas
      • Formula 1 simulators on some ships
      • Full MSC Yacht Club facilities

At the same time, these ships retain a relatively traditional cruise-ship layout.

There is no enormous indoor promenade like you will find on the Meraviglia Class.

There are no neighborhood-style districts like those aboard MSC World America.

And the ships do not emphasize outdoor waterfront space as heavily as the MSC Seaside Class.

That can make Fantasia Class ships considerably easier to understand than MSC’s newest vessels.

The Ships That Changed MSC Cruises

Before MSC Fantasia arrived, the Musica Class represented the larger end of MSC’s fleet.

Those ships were roughly 92,000 to 95,000 gross tons.

Fantasia jumped to nearly 138,000 gross tons.

That additional size gave MSC room to build a much more complete resort experience.

The ships could accommodate larger entertainment venues, additional dining, expanded pool decks, more balcony accommodations and a completely separate premium enclave.

But the most important innovation was MSC Yacht Club.

Rather than creating an entirely separate luxury cruise line, MSC carved out an exclusive section of a mainstream ship.

Yacht Club passengers could enjoy private spaces and premium service while still having access to everything happening around the rest of the ship.

      That model worked.

MSC has since expanded Yacht Club into the Seaside, Meraviglia, World and now Musica Classes.

But Fantasia Class is where the concept started.

      MSC Fantasia

MSC Fantasia is the original ship in the class and one of the most historically important ships MSC has built.

She entered service in 2008 at 137,936 gross tons with capacity for up to 4,363 passengers.

Her biggest claim to fame is simple:

MSC Fantasia was the first ship to offer MSC Yacht Club.

The ship still offers the basic formula that made the class successful:

      • Multiple pools
      • Main dining rooms
      • Specialty dining
      • Numerous bars and lounges
      • Large theater
      • Casino
      • Formula 1 simulator
      • 4D cinema
      • Kids facilities
      • Sports areas
      • MSC Aurea Spa
      • Full MSC Yacht Club

Fantasia also has the I Tropici pool area, providing a more protected swimming environment than a completely open pool deck.

The overall layout is relatively conventional.

Dining, bars, entertainment and shopping are concentrated primarily on the lower public decks.

Cabins occupy much of the middle of the ship.

Pools, buffet dining, spa, fitness and family facilities are located higher up.

That makes Fantasia surprisingly easy to navigate for a ship carrying more than 4,000 passengers.

Read our complete MSC Fantasia guide for cabins, dining, Yacht Club, pools and itinerary details.

      MSC Splendida

      MSC Splendida followed in 2009.

She shares Fantasia’s 137,936 gross tonnage and nearly identical basic platform.

But several features give Splendida her own personality.

One of the biggest is L’Equatore.

This pool area has a sliding roof that can close when the weather is cool or rainy.

That makes Splendida particularly versatile on European itineraries where the weather may not cooperate every day.

Splendida also offers Sea Pavilion, along with a broad restaurant and lounge lineup.

Dining options include venues such as:

      • La Reggia
      • Villa Verde
      • Bora Bora Buffet
      • Pago Buffet
      • L’Olivo
      • Butcher’s Cut
      • Sea Pavilion
      • MSC Yacht Club Restaurant

Splendida was also the first Fantasia Class ship to receive MSC’s redesigned Yacht Club restaurant.

That upgrade has already been completed and serves as the model for similar work being rolled out across the other three ships.

Read our complete MSC Splendida guide for more.

      MSC Divina

      MSC Divina arrived in 2012.

At 139,072 gross tons, Divina is slightly larger than Fantasia and Splendida.

She also carries fewer passengers at maximum capacity – 4,345 – while having more total cabins at 1,751.

Divina has a particularly strong identity because of her connection with Sophia Loren.

MSC designed the ship around the glamour of classic Italian cruising, and there is even a Sophia Loren-inspired Royal Suite.

Divina also represents an evolution of the Fantasia design.

Her outdoor spaces include an aft infinity-style pool, giving the stern of the ship a more open connection to the sea than you find on the original Fantasia design.

      Dining includes venues such as:

      • Villa Rossa
      • The Black Crab
      • Calumet Buffet
      • Manitou Buffet
      • Butcher’s Cut
      • Galaxy Kaito
      • MSC Yacht Club’s Le Muse

Divina combines the traditional Fantasia Class layout with several features that anticipate where MSC ship design would go next.

Read our complete MSC Divina guide for cabins, restaurants, Yacht Club and more.

      MSC Preziosa

MSC Preziosa completed the class in 2013.

She shares Divina’s 139,072 gross tonnage, 4,345-passenger maximum capacity and 1,751 staterooms.

But Preziosa has one of the strongest family and outdoor activity lineups in the class.

      The biggest attraction is Vertigo.

The high-speed waterslide winds around the upper decks and includes a transparent section suspended above the side of the ship.

Preziosa also has Doremi Castle, giving younger passengers a dedicated family aqua area.

At the opposite end of the experience is an aft infinity-style pool overlooking the ship’s wake.

That combination gives Preziosa a particularly strong outdoor identity.

      Dining includes:

      • The Golden Lobster
      • L’Arabesque
      • Le Palmeraie
      • La Locanda
      • Butcher’s Cut
      • Galaxy Kaito
      • MSC Yacht Club Restaurant

Preziosa arguably represents the most developed version of the original Fantasia Class formula.

Read our complete MSC Preziosa guide for more.

Original Fantasia Class vs. Divina and Preziosa

Although MSC groups all four ships together, there are really two versions of the Fantasia Class.

Fantasia and Splendida are the original design.

Divina and Preziosa are slightly enlarged evolutions.

      Overall designOriginal Fantasia platformEnlarged evolution
Aft designMore traditionalStronger aft pool focus

The differences are not dramatic enough that the ships feel like separate classes.

The basic layout, MSC Yacht Club concept and overall onboard experience remain closely related.

But Divina and Preziosa provide a slightly more developed version of the platform.

MSC Yacht Club on Fantasia Class Ships

MSC Yacht Club is arguably the most important reason the Fantasia Class matters.

Every ship in the class was designed with Yacht Club from the beginning.

That is different from ships like MSC Poesia, Magnifica, Musica and Orchestra, where Yacht Club is being added years after construction.

Fantasia Class Yacht Club areas occupy the forward upper portion of each ship.

      Typical facilities include:

      • Top Sail Lounge
      • Dedicated Yacht Club restaurant
      • Concierge
      • 24-hour butler service
      • Private pool
      • Private sundeck
      • Private whirlpools
      • The One Bar
      • Exclusive Yacht Club suites

This created the basic formula MSC still uses today.

Yacht Club guests receive an exclusive environment but can leave the private complex whenever they want and use the restaurants, entertainment, casino, shops and other facilities throughout the ship.

That makes the experience fundamentally different from sailing aboard a small luxury vessel.

Fantasia Class Yacht Club Restaurant Upgrades

MSC is currently modernizing the Yacht Club restaurants across all four Fantasia Class ships.

MSC Splendida was the first to receive the new design.

      The current rollout is:

      • MSC Splendida – completed
      • MSC Fantasia – December 2026
      • MSC Divina – April 2027
      • MSC Preziosa – February 2028

The redesigned restaurants use a more contemporary look with darker tones, softer textures, updated lighting and subtle partitions intended to provide more privacy while preserving panoramic ocean views.

It is important to understand what is actually changing.

MSC is not adding Yacht Club to these ships.

They have had Yacht Club from the beginning.

The project is specifically modernizing the existing Yacht Club restaurants.

That distinction is different from the current MSC Musica Class refurbishment program, where MSC Yacht Club itself is being added to ships that originally did not have it.

      Cabins on Fantasia Class Ships

Fantasia Class ships offer significantly more cabin variety than MSC’s smaller Lirica and Musica Class vessels.

      Typical categories include:

      • Interior cabins
      • Ocean-view cabins
      • Balcony cabins
      • Aurea balcony cabins
      • Aurea suites
      • MSC Yacht Club suites

Balcony cabins make up a much larger portion of the ship than aboard the older Lirica Class.

That makes Fantasia Class a much better option for cruisers who consider a private balcony essential.

There are also several unusual suite configurations.

Some Aurea suites have traditional balconies.

Others use large panoramic windows instead.

That can create major differences between cabins that appear similar when simply comparing category names.

Always check the specific deck plan and cabin description before booking.

      MSC Yacht Club Suites

Yacht Club significantly expands the accommodation lineup.

Depending on the ship, categories can include:

      • Yacht Club Deluxe Suites
      • Yacht Club Grand Suites
      • Yacht Club Executive & Family Suites
      • Yacht Club Executive & Family Suites with Balcony
      • Yacht Club Royal Suites

One interesting feature of Fantasia Class is that some of the largest Yacht Club suites use panoramic sealed windows rather than traditional balconies.

Those rooms can provide considerably more interior living space but may not be ideal for passengers who consider outdoor access essential.

      Again, the exact category matters.

      Dining on Fantasia Class Ships

The Fantasia Class offers substantially more dining variety than MSC’s smaller ship classes.

Every ship has multiple main dining venues, buffet dining, casual food and specialty options.

But the exact lineup varies by ship.

Butcher’s Cut is available across much of the class.

Divina and Preziosa also offer Galaxy Kaito.

      Splendida has Sea Pavilion.

Fantasia has venues including La Cantina Toscana alongside its other dining options.

And every ship has a private restaurant exclusively for Yacht Club passengers.

Our MSC Dining Guide explains how included and specialty dining works across the fleet.

For information on the included casual option, our MSC Buffet Guide covers hours, food stations, included drinks and late-night dining.

      Bars and Lounges

Bars and lounges are one of the strongest parts of the Fantasia Class.

These ships were built before MSC shifted toward enormous central promenades.

Instead, nightlife is spread across numerous individual venues.

Depending on the ship, passengers may find:

      • Piano bars
      • Jazz lounges
      • Sports bars
      • Coffee bars
      • Wine bars
      • Cigar lounges
      • Pool bars
      • Casino bars
      • Nightclubs
      • Large aft lounges
      • Yacht Club bars

That gives the ships a different feel from something like MSC Grandiosa.

Rather than returning to the same central promenade every night, passengers move around the ship to find different entertainment and drinking environments.

Our MSC Drink Packages Guide explains MSC’s current beverage packages, limits and inclusions.

      Coffee on Fantasia Class Ships

Dedicated coffee bars are available across the class.

MSC’s Italian heritage makes espresso and specialty coffee a particularly visible part of the onboard experience.

Depending on the ship, venues include places such as Il Cappuccino on Fantasia and Preziosa, along with other dedicated cafés.

Our MSC Coffee Guide explains what coffee is included and how specialty drinks work with beverage packages.

      Entertainment on Fantasia Class Ships

Fantasia Class ships provide considerably more entertainment than the smaller generations that came before them.

      Typical facilities include:

      • Large theater
      • Casino
      • Live music
      • Nightclub
      • 4D cinema
      • Formula 1 simulator on selected ships
      • Video arcade
      • Sports areas
      • Trivia
      • Theme parties
      • Karaoke
      • Organized games

The exact attraction lineup varies by ship.

Fantasia and Splendida helped establish the Formula 1 and immersive cinema experiences that became common on several later MSC ships.

Preziosa expanded the family experience further with Vertigo and Doremi Castle.

The class does not have the giant entertainment complexes found on today’s World Class ships.

But there is enough going on that a sea day does not depend entirely on sitting around the pool.

      Pools and Outdoor Spaces

Pool areas vary more across the Fantasia Class than they initially appear.

MSC Fantasia has I Tropici, providing a more protected pool environment.

MSC Splendida has L’Equatore, which features a retractable roof.

Divina and Preziosa place greater emphasis on aft outdoor areas, including infinity-style pools overlooking the wake.

All four also offer traditional central pool areas.

Yacht Club guests receive an additional private pool and sun deck.

That means Fantasia Class passengers generally have more pool options than those sailing on MSC’s smaller Musica or Lirica Class ships.

Which Fantasia Class Ship Has the Best Pools?

      There is no single answer.

Splendida has a strong argument if you are sailing somewhere where the weather may be unpredictable because L’Equatore can be protected with its retractable roof.

Divina and Preziosa are stronger if you like aft-facing outdoor areas.

Preziosa is particularly good for families because Vertigo and Doremi Castle add more water-based activities.

Yacht Club passengers aboard all four ships have access to their own private outdoor area.

      Family Activities and Kids Clubs

The Fantasia Class was a major step forward for MSC family cruising.

All four ships have dedicated kids and teen spaces.

Typical programming is divided by age and can include:

      • Kids clubs
      • Teen clubs
      • Video games
      • Sports
      • Pool activities
      • Family competitions
      • Arts and crafts
      • Organized events

The exact attraction lineup differs by ship.

Preziosa is probably the strongest family option in the class because of Vertigo and Doremi Castle.

Other Fantasia Class ships still provide pools, kids clubs, immersive cinema and other family activities.

Our MSC Cruises With Kids Guide covers the overall family experience.

Our MSC Kids Clubs Guide explains the different age groups and what parents should know before sailing.

      MSC Aurea Spa and Fitness

All four Fantasia Class ships have full MSC Aurea Spa facilities and fitness centers.

Expect services and facilities such as:

      • Massage treatments
      • Beauty services
      • Thermal facilities
      • Salon services
      • Relaxation spaces
      • Cardio equipment
      • Strength equipment
      • Fitness classes

These are substantially larger wellness areas than you will find aboard MSC’s smallest ships.

The class also offers outdoor walking and jogging opportunities.

Our MSC Running and Walking Tracks Guide compares the exercise options across MSC ships.

Where Do Fantasia Class Ships Sail?

Fantasia Class ships currently cover several different regions.

      Current and upcoming deployments include:

      • Mediterranean
      • Canary Islands and Madeira
      • Northern Europe
      • South America
      • MSC Grand Voyages

MSC Fantasia remains heavily focused on Europe, including Mediterranean and Canary Islands itineraries.

MSC Splendida operates Mediterranean cruises before moving to South America for the 2026-2027 winter season and returning to Europe.

MSC Divina similarly splits time between the Mediterranean and South America.

MSC Preziosa has a particularly strong Northern Europe role, including winter and summer itineraries from ports such as Hamburg, Rotterdam and Southampton.

Deployments can change by season, so itinerary should always be checked for your specific travel dates.

      Fantasia Class vs. Musica Class

The Fantasia Class represents a major step up from the MSC Musica Class.

      PoolsMore traditionalMore varied
      Family attractionsModerateMore extensive
Overall feelMid-sized traditional shipLarge resort-style ship

The Musica Class is easier to navigate and carries fewer passengers.

Fantasia Class gives you substantially more onboard variety.

If you like the traditional layout of the Musica ships but want a larger pool deck, more dining, more entertainment and a mature Yacht Club experience, Fantasia Class is the logical next step.

      Fantasia Class vs. Seaside Class

The MSC Seaside Class took MSC in a very different design direction.

Fantasia Class ships are more inward-focused.

Public spaces are largely concentrated inside the ship, with traditional lounges and entertainment areas spread across several decks.

Seaside Class ships place much more emphasis on connecting passengers with the ocean.

They have wider waterfront promenades, dramatic aft pool areas, more outdoor dining and more exterior circulation.

Choose Fantasia Class if you prefer:

      • Traditional cruise-ship layout
      • Numerous individual lounges
      • Established Yacht Club
      • Large ship without extreme mega-ship scale
      • More enclosed and protected public areas

Choose Seaside Class if you prefer:

      • Outdoor spaces
      • Waterfront promenades
      • More modern pool design
      • Larger waterparks
      • Stronger warm-weather focus

Both provide a full resort-style MSC experience.

They simply approach it very differently.

Fantasia Class vs. MSC’s Newest Ships

Compared with the Meraviglia and World Classes, Fantasia Class ships feel considerably more traditional.

You will not find an enormous LED-roof promenade.

There are no World Class districts.

There are fewer restaurants and fewer high-tech attractions.

But Fantasia Class ships are also smaller and generally easier to understand.

      Passengers still get:

      • Several restaurants
      • Extensive bars and lounges
      • Multiple pools
      • Full kids facilities
      • Large theater
      • Casino
      • Specialty dining
      • Spa
      • Fitness center
      • MSC Yacht Club

For many cruisers, that may be enough.

Not everyone needs a 200,000-plus-ton ship.

Which MSC Fantasia Class Ship Is Best?

The ships are similar enough that itinerary should still be a major part of the decision.

      But there are meaningful differences.

MSC Fantasia is the best choice if you are interested in the history of MSC Yacht Club and want to sail the ship where the concept began.

MSC Splendida is particularly appealing if a covered pool matters to you. L’Equatore and its retractable roof make the ship particularly versatile in cooler or unpredictable weather.

MSC Divina has a strong personality built around Sophia Loren, plus the aft infinity-style pool and a slightly newer version of the Fantasia platform.

MSC Preziosa has the strongest argument for families thanks to Vertigo and Doremi Castle.

      There is no bad answer.

Your itinerary, departure port, cabin availability and Yacht Club pricing will probably matter more than the relatively small differences between the four ships.

Pros and Cons of the MSC Fantasia Class

The biggest advantage of the Fantasia Class is balance.

These ships are large enough to provide a legitimate resort-style experience.

There are multiple pools, lots of bars, specialty restaurants, casinos, large theaters, family attractions and a full Yacht Club.

But they remain substantially smaller than MSC’s newest ships.

That can make them easier to navigate and less intimidating.

      The biggest downside is age.

The first Fantasia Class ship entered service in 2008.

Some areas inevitably feel more traditional than what you will find aboard MSC World America, Seascape or Euribia.

The class also lacks the giant promenades and dramatic outdoor waterfront designs that define newer MSC ships.

However, MSC continues to invest in the class.

The current Yacht Club restaurant modernization program is a good example.

These ships are not being abandoned simply because newer vessels have joined the fleet.

Who Should Sail on an MSC Fantasia Class Ship?

Fantasia Class ships are a strong fit for:

      • Cruisers who want MSC Yacht Club
      • Passengers who want a large ship without extreme mega-ship size
      • Couples who enjoy bars and lounges
      • Families who want more activities than a Musica or Lirica Class ship provides
      • Travelers who like traditional cruise layouts
      • Passengers who want specialty dining
      • Mediterranean cruisers
      • South America cruisers
      • Northern Europe cruisers
      • Travelers who want a balance between ship amenities and destination-focused cruising

They may be less appealing for passengers who primarily want:

      • MSC’s newest technology
      • Huge indoor promenades
      • World Class-style districts
      • The largest waterparks
      • Waterfront promenades
      • Brand-new ship design
      • The absolute widest selection of specialty restaurants

Final Thoughts on the MSC Fantasia Class

The Fantasia Class may be one of the most important ship generations MSC has ever built.

These ships marked the point where MSC moved beyond traditional mid-sized cruising and began building large resort-style vessels.

And they introduced MSC Yacht Club.

That alone makes the class historically important.

But the ships remain relevant for more practical reasons.

At roughly 138,000 to 139,000 gross tons, they occupy an increasingly attractive middle ground.

They are much more amenity-rich than the Musica or Lirica Classes.

Yet they are considerably smaller than MSC’s newest World Class vessels.

You still get multiple pools, specialty dining, large theaters, casinos, family activities, numerous bars, spa and fitness facilities and a full Yacht Club.

The layout is also relatively easy to understand.

Fantasia and Splendida provide the original version of the experience.

Divina and Preziosa refine it with slightly larger designs and different outdoor spaces.

And the Yacht Club restaurant modernization program shows MSC is still investing in the class nearly two decades after Fantasia first entered service.

For cruisers who want a substantial MSC ship, an established Yacht Club and plenty to do without moving all the way to mega-ship scale, the Fantasia Class remains one of the most balanced options in the fleet.
