MSC Group and Casa de Campo Ink Deal to Transform Catalina Island into a Premier Caribbean Escape

In a move that signals a massive commitment to the Dominican Republic, CTL Maritime—a subsidiary of the MSC Group—has officially entered into a 50/50 joint venture with the legendary Casa de Campo Resort & Villas to operate and re-develop Catalina Island.

For MSC Cruises fans, this is the news we’ve been waiting for. As the cruise line continues to aggressively expand its presence in the Caribbean, the development of Catalina Island (Isla Catalina) represents a major step forward in creating a “private-island-style” experience that blends MSC’s European flair with the untouched natural beauty of the Dominican Republic.

The MSC Family Connection: What is CTL?

To understand the weight of this announcement, it’s important to look at the corporate structure. CTL Maritime is part of the MSC Global umbrella, making it a sister company to MSC Cruises. This vertical integration is exactly how MSC managed the development of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in the Bahamas. By keeping the development “in the family,” MSC ensures that the guest experience on the island will be tailor-made to meet the standards of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys passengers.

La Romana: The New Caribbean Hub

This announcement comes on the heels of MSC Cruises confirming that La Romana will serve as a significant homeport for the upcoming seasons. Specifically, the MSC Opera is slated to use La Romana as a home base for its Caribbean itineraries.

By securing a long-term stake in Catalina Island—which sits just a short, scenic tender ride away from the La Romana cruise pier—MSC has effectively created a “Homeport-Plus” experience. Guests embarking in La Romana can now enjoy a world-class beach day right at their doorstep, while those visiting on transit calls will have a guaranteed, high-end destination that rivals any private island in the industry.

Exploring the “Natural Monument”: Catalina vs. Ocean Cay

Catalina Island is often described as one of the last true “undiscovered” gems of the Caribbean. It is roughly 2.4 square miles (about 1,500 acres) in size. To put that in perspective for MSC regulars: Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is approximately 95 acres. While Ocean Cay is a stunning feat of environmental restoration on a former industrial site, Catalina Island is a “Natural Monument.” It is significantly larger and comes with a pre-existing ecosystem of lush tropical vegetation and some of the most vibrant coral reefs in the Dominican Republic. While MSC won’t be using the entire island (much of it is protected), the scale of the beach destination and the surrounding nature trails will offer a much more expansive “wild” feeling than the manicured shores of Ocean Cay.

    The Vision: Pristine, Not Plastic

One of the most encouraging aspects of the joint venture is the commitment to sustainability. MSC and Casa de Campo have made it clear that they intend to keep the island pristine. The goal isn’t to build a concrete theme park, but rather to add the “invisible infrastructure” and luxury amenities needed to accommodate thousands of cruise passengers comfortably.

    Planned developments include:

    • A Signature Open-Air Pavilion: A central dining hub featuring international and local Dominican cuisine.
    • Tropical Palapa Bars: Shaded social areas designed to blend into the landscape.
    • Advanced Water Sports Center: Specifically designed to take advantage of the island’s famous “Wall”—a coral drop-off that is considered one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in the Caribbean.
    • Luxury Cabanas: Following the success of the yacht-club style cabanas on Ocean Cay, Catalina will see high-end daybeds and private retreats for families and couples.

A New Chapter for Caribbean Itineraries

This move changes the game for MSC’s Caribbean route planning. Historically, La Romana was a beautiful but often overlooked port. By turning Catalina Island into a premier destination, MSC has turned the region into a “must-visit.”

For the MSC fan, this means more variety. We are no longer limited to the standard Eastern/Western Caribbean loops. The inclusion of a private-sector-managed Catalina Island allows MSC to offer an experience that combines the cultural richness of the Dominican Republic with the exclusivity of a private island retreat.

Whether you are sailing on the MSC Opera out of La Romana or visiting on one of the larger Seaside-class ships, Catalina Island is set to become the “Crown Jewel” of the Southern Caribbean.

    Final Thoughts

MSC Group is proving once again that they aren’t just following the cruise industry—they are leading it. By partnering with Central Romana (the owners of Casa de Campo), they have aligned themselves with the gold standard of Dominican hospitality.

Keep your eyes on the booking calendars; once the upgrades to Catalina Island are complete, these La Romana itineraries are going to be the hottest tickets in the MSC fleet.
