It is a bittersweet day at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook. Today, April 19, 2026, the MSC Meraviglia officially casts off its lines for its final departure from New York City. Since making history as the first ship to offer year-round service from Brooklyn in April 2023, the “Ship for All Seasons” has become a permanent fixture of the New York harbor.
For those of us in the Northeast, the Meraviglia wasn’t just a ship; it was our “no-fly” ticket to the tropics. As she departs for Halifax and her subsequent trans-Atlantic crossing, we’re looking back at why this ship was so special for our region.
The Ultimate “Ship for All Seasons”
The Meraviglia was uniquely suited for the unpredictable weather of the North Atlantic. While other ships are built for constant sun, the Meraviglia class was designed as an “indoor resort.”:
- The Galleria Meraviglia: The 315-foot central promenade, topped by a stunning 240 foot LED “digital sky,” allowed passengers to enjoy parades, shopping, and dining in a climate-controlled environment while it was snowing outside in Brooklyn.
- The Magrodome: The ship features a massive sliding glass roof over the main pool area. This meant that even during those chilly February departures, guests could be swimming in 80-degree water while the Statue of Liberty faded into the distance.
Convenience & The Red Hook Experience
For local cruisers, the Meraviglia’s residency at Red Hook changed the game. Being within driving distance meant avoiding the soaring costs of airfare and the stress of JFK or LaGuardia.
The ship also brought a unique international flair to the terminal. Unlike many Florida-based sailings, the Meraviglia typically saw a 50/50 mix of American and international passengers. This created a cosmopolitan atmosphere onboard that felt quintessentially “New York”—a melting pot of languages and cultures all heading toward the same Bahamian sun.
A Season of Challenges
It hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing for the “Wonder” (as Meraviglia translates in Italian). This past year tested the ship’s limits:
- Weather Extremes: The ship faced record-breaking fog and high seas in the North Atlantic this winter, leading to several “White Out” departures that required expert navigation.
- Technical Hurdles: Mechanical issues involving the ship’s propulsion systems led to a few canceled cruises recently and a brief dry-dock stint in Portland, Maine. While these disruptions were a headache for some, they highlighted MSC’s commitment to safety before undertaking the massive trans-Atlantic voyage scheduled for this week.
Sustainable Milestones
One of the Meraviglia’s greatest legacies in New York is its environmental impact. Just last year, the ship became the first to successfully utilize shore power at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, allowing it to shut off its engines while docked and significantly reduce local emissions. It leaves New York as a cleaner, greener ambassador for the cruise industry.
What’s Next?
After a brief stop in Halifax, the Meraviglia will cross the Atlantic to spend the summer in the Mediterranean. She will be exploring the classic ports of Italy, Spain, and France before making her grand return to the U.S. on November 11, 2026. However, her new home will be the brand-new MSC terminal in Miami, leaving a void in the Brooklyn harbor that will be hard to fill.
The Meraviglia will be missed! Whether it was the Swarovski crystal staircases, the Butcher’s Cut steaks, or just the ease of a Sunday morning drive to the pier, she gave Northeast cruisers a home away from home.
